Target Audience

Endocrinologists, primary care physicians, and other healthcare professionals with an interest in diabetes, endocrinology, and metabolism

Statement of Need
Continuous, high-quality education of healthcare professionals is urgently needed to provide optimal clinical care of patients with diabetes and endocrine-related issues. Knowledge of recent regulatory changes, clinical trial findings and novel therapeutic agents is critical. Key endocrine management issues include diabetes monitoring and therapy, diabetic nephropathy, obesity, osteoporosis, cholesterol management, hypercalcemia, thyroid nodules, male hypogonadism, and challenging surgical approaches for thyroid cancer.

Learning Objectives
  • Discuss "hot topics" in diabetes, including current management and treatment strategies
  • Explain the use of continuous glucose monitoring for diabetes and optimal prevention of hypoglycemia unawareness.
  • Discuss the rationale behind the new ATP 4 lipid lowering guidelines and optimal implementation.
  • Utilize a framework for identifying and treating patients with male hypogonadism, and discuss the impact of testosterone therapy on metabolic risk.
  • Describe how to apply recent developments in the areas of thyroid dysfunction and endocrine neoplasms into practice, including:
    • interpreting the Bethesda classification for thyroid cytopathology and know when to consider molecular testing;
    • appropriately order and interpret genetic testing for patients with suspected Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia, adrenal tumors and paraganglioma syndromes; and
    • applying current guidelines for the management of patients with thyroid cancer, hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism.
  • Describe emerging data on brown fat in diabetes and obesity.
  • Outline the diagnostic approach to hypercalcemia and utilize the most current medical therapies for treatment.
