Huntington's Disease: Understanding the Clinical Course, Pathogenesis, and Treatment is a four-part web conference series targeted to neurologists, as well as NPs and PAs specializing in neurology.
Statement of Need
Huntington's disease (HD) is a rare, inherited neurological disorder resulting from a genetically programmed degeneration of neurons in the brain. This degeneration causes uncontrolled movements, loss of intellectual faculties, and emotional disturbance. The most obvious sign of HD seen in affected individuals is chorea, an involuntary, flowing, dance-like motion. Approximately 30,000 patients in the United States have HD, and another 200,000 are at risk of developing the condition. The primary objective of this initiative is to support the identified educational needs of neurologists, NPs and PAs in treating chorea associated with Huntington's disease. A multi-disciplinary team, led by a physician, with input from rehabilitiation therapists, nurses, psychologists, genetic counselors, social workers and other healthcare professionals, provides the ideal care for HD. Patients may be able to achieve a greater quality of life through certain physician competencies pertaining to clinical practice. These competencies include understanding the pathognomonic features of the movement disorder, behavioral issues, new medications including dosing schedules and therapeutic goals, as well as the availability of pre-screening and genetic testing through the utilization of case vignettes to visualize treatment expertise.
